This Blog Post is written amid concerns of QR scam. Also, we will be discussing about some simple safety precautions to be adopted for pre, during and post process of payments made via QR Codes.
What’s QR?
QR is a popular acronym for Quick Response, is usually a barcode for exchanging of currency digitally.
When do we come across QR code?
- Generally, while you use Whatsapp web on to your laptop to connect mobile Whatsapp to laptop.
- Making an online payment via PhonePe, Gpay, AmazonPay etc.
The above mentioned examples are some day to day example usage of QR codes.
Brief history of how QR code got incorporated in my life when we embraced for digital currency.
Until my Graduation, I have never used any online/digital payments since all we had was button phones and mobile data/internet was a bit costly. Next, came the multimedia phones, they were the beginners for a smartphone era. Then, it was Finally the Android who occupied the smartphone market, although not smart enough because news crops in every 3 to 6 months about the safety of apps, devices and user data.
Since, I was in now so called smartphone era, I was still hesitant to use the digital payments.
- Reason 1: I was not yet earning actively. Hence, no inflow / outflow of cash.
- Reason 2: All the cash we handled was banknotes in the form of Hard Cash.
- Reason 3: Businesses around me were little or lesser aware of setting up Digital Payments. Hardly 1 or 2 out of 10 used it just for show off purposes. But real transactions never took off at that time.
- Reason 4: People were so found of ATMs (debit card) at my time that a single person would maintain at least 1 or more than 1 from different bank accounts.
What drove the initial users towards Digital Payments?
INSTALL PROCESS: Incentives provided by Android apps welcomed users towards the Digital Payment. I am using the soft-word as “Incentives” , but more or less it was a just bribing a user to make use of digital payments. So, Initially, when you downloaded with your friend’s referral, you would gain some amount and so does your friend. It was a win-win situation for both the service provider and customer.
USAGE PROCESS: The service provider knew that once the app is installed, the user will get a finite amount as joining bonus. But, now it was the time to keep the flock using it and not to deviate from it. Hence, they came with another plan. This time, whenever the user made a payment / received an amount, there was a gift / voucher / cashback and other form of goodies to the user to encourage using these platforms.
UPDATE PROCESS: After a considerable amount of users onboarded onto the digital payments, the digital service provider came up with new User Interface, Customer Experience, Safety features etc.
And so does the pack of jacklegs !!! They were eagerly waiting to explore the chances of siphoning the hard earned money through various illegal methods.
Hence, it is recommended to be cautious while dealing with digital payments. Here, I have listed out some of the pre , during and post process of payment checks to make sure you are on the correct path of it and not being tricked into spammers.
PRE Process (Before Payment):
- Make sure that you ask to the shop owner for QR Code sticker or QR Code stand.
- Confirm the name of the owner or the business entity present on QR Code Sticker belongs to them.
- Ask if they have a read out loud machine which confirms amount received once payment is done.
DURING Payment:
- Ensure your internet / network is stable.
- Scan for the QR code and reconfirm with the receiver the number & name that’s being displayed on your mobile screen.
- Enter the amount correctly. Sometimes, an extra zero entered may go unnoticed.
- Enter UPI Pin correctly and make payment.
POST Payment:
- Verify with the shop owner or business entity if he/she has received the expected amount.
- Also, show your current transaction details.
- As a matter of fact, validate the day, date, time and status (successful / pending).
Since, digital payments allow the flexibility for the sender and receiver to be physically present in front of each other, both the parties can be in any part of the world. Now, here comes a great deal of suspicion.
But, we have to make sure and certain that:
- Before making payment call via normal or video call and confirms if he/she has requested for money.
- No matter how close is your friend or a family member or a business entity owner, do not respond to text message asking for money. Just call them and confirm whether any such request was raised by them. Only upon confirming make a payment initiation and follow the above pre, during and post payment processes.
- Do not scan for online QR Scans where they lure the users into sending amount to user account, instead we end up loosing our money.
- Do not click on suspicious links or spam messages which might lead to unnecessary circumstances.
- Make sure whether it is an inflow or outflow of money. Check once, Confirm Twice before making any payments.
Who are targets of fake QR code scams?
- QR Code scammers target event related such as pandemic in the name of relief work etc.
- They might choose certain age groups such as old people, since they will easily fall to prey because of the technology being new and in case of not knowing on how to handle the transactions safely.
- They might also pose as job providers, people from banks etc ,. and what all you can guess on it.
PS: Article is written and posted to make aware in rising of fraud cases in QR Code payments. One of the final reason I want to add due to significant increase in scams is that we have become so overconfident or say it ignorant and pay less attention / time that we forget to cross check or confirm the payments.
Supplement: In case if you being duped despite all necessary precaution, one kind request please don’t approach me. Proceed to your nearest cyber crime cell / police station and file a complaint.
